I get that 'Read > error' on boot again. :( This is probably your problem. I bet you're using an Award BIOS; apparently they have a cow if the partition table doesn't exist. Try making the disk in compatibility mode; see FAQ question #8.9 for details. I had the same problem when I test-formatted a 1GB disk for the diskformat tutorial. My workstation is an ASUS T2P4-based board with the Award BIOS. I should have studied that problem further at that point :-/ I even put a warning in the diskformat tutorial, which I later removed by popular demand. I will probably reverse that and join the FAQ in printing the Award/dedicated disk warning.
