I've had real similar problems before... the one time I loaded from a CD - it turned out to BE the CDRom drive. The 2nd time I'd had similar problems was over my DSL line. A bad router at my ISP caused packets to be lost and multiple retries. I ended up reinstalling that system from scratch, same system, no problems.
