hmmm...

When my IDE drives spin down, it could take a good while to come
up and I didn't see a problem...

I suppose you could write a cheesy script which:


while true
do
	touch a file on the file system
	sleep a while
done

to prevent it from spinning down.

(this may be a vague approximation of what you need to do to
get through the buffer cache to the physical media).
