You need to tell us what version of FreeBSD you are running.  The
conflicts checking is a recent addition to FreeBSD and requires a
later version of ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk than is in the (for instance)
4.8 default install.  Theoretically, changes have been made to
various files to try to make them work under older releases,
but the only guaranteed configurations of the ports framework is
on the latest -current and the latest -stable.  (It's just too hard to
go back and do the QA for previous releases.)
