As for that last, I'm sure there are probably several
ways, but I'm a simpleton.  Why not:

% dmesg | grep DMA
atapci0: <SiS 962/963 UDMA133 controller> port 0x4000-0x400f,0x374-0x377,
                   0x170-0x177,0x3f4-0x3f7,0x1f0-0x1f7 at device 2.5 on pci0

Hrmm, I need to see if my disk'll go faster ... ;-)
