As was suggested, it was sendmail_flags in /etc/rc.conf
that was the knob to be adjusted for this, since I usually
run with ppp -auto.

Is there any theory/philosophy about what is a sane queue
wait time for a dial up internet connection? or differing
internet access/usage profiles in general?

thanks for the help,
