No, you can't use Linux drivers

But you can get source for driver and write your own for FreeBSD

Good old serial port external modem. By "old" I don't assume "old
age", but "good thing which will really work". 
If you wish use modem while travel (without phoneline?) then look at
some PCCard modems. But I think that if you have phoneline around you,
you'll also have powerline, so better buy good external serial modem,
and support manufacturers of these modems :-) .
