While I understand that's generally the case, it's how Intel supports =
older releases.  The code in -current does support building within older =
releases (at least 7.X and 8.X), except for the flaws I pointed out.

Jack Vogel submitted r217129, r217131, and r217132 to fix this PR, but =
didn't mark it closed.
