There is a minimal gnome installation in
 	/usr/ports/x11/gnome2-lite
you can start with that and - if you like it - add all the the 
other stuff. 
One caveat:
First install /usr/ports/x11/xorg (i.e. xorg-7.2) and check if 
your monitor and graphics card are set up correctly.
