These seem to be mutually exlusive indications. What do you mean by "ping
is not working?"

There are commonly diagnosis tools that come with a NIC that are DOS
programs on a floppy. You can check your NICs hardware with them by
booting a floppy and running the tools. No such stuff exists for FreeBSD
that I am aware of.
