Disgusting hack patch to do the latter attached.
Drop it in as ${PORTSDIR}/devel/automake/patches/patch-ad ..

However, I think we need to come to some kind of consensus as to
where huge meta-ports like GNOME and KDE should be rooted, since
the current rules break down in the face of such monoliths.
