I had a similar problem, till I replaced the 4.3Gb SCSI disk with a normal
seagate disk. The drive geometry seems to be the problem.

HP Drive:

bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 2
tracks/cylinder: 91
sectors/cylinder: 182
cylinders: 45771
sectors/unit: 8330502

Seagate Drive:
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 32
tracks/cylinder: 64
sectors/cylinder: 2048
cylinders: 499
sectors/unit: 1023968

I treid for days to get it working on the HP drive...no luck. The HP works
fine, as long as you don't try to put your root/boot filesystems on it.
