I use an HP 8200i on my FreeBSD system, and haven't had any problems with
it.  I suspect the 8100i will work equally as well.

Note that, currently, you must use the "wormcontrol" tool in order to
write CD-R/RW's - the cdrecord port WILL NOT work.  Example scripts are
provided in /usr/share/examples/atapi.
