Further proof that the core of the problem is with a hardware-3D setting.
Trying gnome3 from marcuscom ports, gdm3's 1-greeter-log registers shutdown
cause as no 3D support:

gnome-session[2628]: DEBUG(+): GsmManager: Client added:
/org/gnome/SessionManager/Client1
gnome-session[2628]: DEBUG(+): GsmDBusClient:
obj_path=/org/gnome/SessionManager/Client1
interface=org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties method=GetAll
gnome-session-is-accelerated: No hardware 3D support.
gnome-session-check-accelerated: Helper exited with code 256
gnome-session[2628]: WARNING: Session 'gdm-shell' runnable check failed:
Exited with code 1
gnome-session[2628]: DEBUG(+): fill: *** Session is not runnable

using the xorg-devel tree
$ glxgears =>
IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 2 0
4390 frames in 5.0 seconds = 877.999 FPS

10-Current-amd64-using ccache-portstree merged with marcuscom.gnome3 & xorg.devel
