Adam, 

I dunno bout the adv1(i'm assuming it's a sound card?), but try just using
device pcm, works great for me.  As far as the ata stuff, uncomment the device
atadisk line in your kernel conf, and check /etc/fstab.  Make sure you are
using at and not wd.  Read /usr/src/UPDATING for more info, especially the note
from 19991210.
