Agreed.  I do not know if this happened in this case.

That's why I used the term "common sense" in my original message.

At the absolute least, a polite email to the maintainer, possibly
with a note in the commit log to that effect, would go a long way
towards removing these kinds of questions.  In this case there were
no notes in the commit logs, leading us to merely speculate.
