I was quite surprised about the double spacing when I came to America. I do recall having read somewhere several years ago that, indeed, one space was preferred now. I do not remember where I read it (*maybe* Writer's Digest?), I just remember having read it, and being happy about it (since it allowed me to go back to the way I used to do back home).
