You need vt100 at least. I'm nearly positive that the VT52 (and the VT50) allowed for a "answerback" string that could be set in software. I seem to recall writing some code to take advantage of this back when I was in high school for a company doing VMS 3.4 and RSTS/E 6.3 or 7.0. However, my memory is dim about this, since it might have just been a terminal type detection....
