I'm a recent convert from Linux too. The approach I took was to
install FreeBSD within VMWare (http://www.vmware.com) so I could get
used to the new install and take it for a test drive before commiting
a machine to it. FYI, I have since dumped Linux on my gateway box and
am using FreeBSD 4.2-stable with ipfw/natd and LOVE IT!
