Hi there,=20

I have not needed help with BSD so much as I do now.=20

This morning I was greeted with messages regarding read errors for a =
second HD (wd1) I had installed a week earlier. I fsck'ed a few times =
which reported unreadable sectors for the problem HD and so I physically =
removed the drive from the IDE with intent to give it back to the =
seller. fsck also showed me that wd0, the primary HD was working ok with =
a little fragmentation.=20

Now when I boot up it gives me this -=20

Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0...OK
Invalid Partition
Invalid Partition
No /boot/loader
>>FreeBSD/i386/BOOT
Default:0:wd(0,a)/kernel
boot:
Invalid partition
No /kernel=20

Of course, I can't boot anything from here because of 'Invalid =
Partition', not a GENERIC kernel, not an old compile... nothing.=20

I am not new to unix but I am new to BSD and while I have read the docs, =
HOWTO's, handbook, etc etc I think there might be something I am =
missing.. getting this fixed concerns me but knowing what I did wrong =
concerns me more. Is there something I should have done before I removed =
the secondary HD? Is there a reason why I am getting invalid partition =
when booting when I can run fdisk (post install config from cd) and it =
shows me that the drive is partitioned correctly with the usual 3 =
partitions, the largest being the freebsd native type. =20

I am sorry to clog the mailing list with such an annoying error, I would =
fdisk and start over but this is for a server machine I have been =
working on for several weeks. Starting over could mean literally months =
of coding/reconfiguring due to my inexcusably lax backups. (fellow =
admins please take pity!)

Please forward help to my reply address (dylan@dragnet.com.au) and I =
shall post the solution(s) summary back to the mailing list.

Cheers,=20

Dylan O'Donnell
