So far, 2 people have pointed out APM... :)

Actually, I do have APM in the kernel, as I have a very nice 4.0
kernel on one of my laptops, including the mandatory IPFILTER and
forwarding, bridging options.  I didn't feel like compiling a kernel
on a 486/66 (do you blame me? :)

I don't know why this would suddenly start happening this way, almost
6 months after I shipped it out.  I guess I'll compile a new 4.0 kernel
here and install it on the firewall, because there isn't any way that
host will stay up long enough for a kernel compile.
