That was my first thought.  Why is it unacceptable?  (I just don't
know, and it may help me come up with a better idea.)

Well, yeah, but you can't reset an ISA device's port without doing
that either, so at least it's no worse than an ISA device.  But I know
you don't want to add any options to the code, so that's that.
