There was no previous Gnome.  A fresh 4.1.1. system.  I should have
checked the mail archives before I tried to install it, as they are full
of similar tales.  Perhaps there is some yet unknown incompatibility. 
BTW, I am using XFree86-4.0. Could that be the problem?
