You may be thinking of Tekram (http://www.tekram.com/). I have one of
their DC390F cards in my 3.1R system, and it works just fine. I had to
add

controller      ncr0            # Tekram SCSI card

...plus an entry for the CD-ROM hanging off the SCSI card, to my kernel
config to make it work. Pretty painless.
