Thanks to everybody who answered.

My first suspicion was, that these Cat.5
(or RJ45) cable connections break very easily.
But as you told me, they are quite stable.

So I had a look
at google for cable specifications and found out, that there
are "straight" and crossover cables
[ www.a2zcables.com  has pictures and descriptions of
these]. For just connecting two PC's you take a crossover.

When you connect a PC to a hub you use the straight ones,
