I have this problem when I'm using the "xterm" (or derivatives) TERM
settings.

It's setup this way in the default /etc/termcap for some strange reason.
Editing the entry for xterm and then doing a "cap_mkdb" sorts it out fine.

I've only fixed the delete/backspace problem so far tho:

[mwest@gimli] /usr/share/misc$ diff termcap.old termcap
300c300
< :kh=\EOH:@7=\EOF:kb=^H:kD=^?:\
---

Take a look at termcap(5) in the man pages for the format.
