Sounds to me like the card is either set for Plug and Play, or the default
interface is 10base2. I've had the exact same problem, which was cured
by unsetting plug and play and/or changing the default media to 10base-T.

Download the 3c509 configuration utility from the 3com website. You will
need a dos disk to boot from.
