Edit /etc/XF86Config and change the appropriate lines to read this:

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol	"SysMouse"
    Device	"/dev/sysmouse"

and try it again.  I can't run X as PS/2 mouse - gives the same error
when I do.  When X dumps, it's a good idea to look at ALL of the
errors/warnings, 'cause it probably said something about not being
able to connect to the mouse in there somewhere.
