I used to have almost the same setup: Epson 1240U, VIA chipset, FreeBSD
4.x., and the scanner worked correctly with xscanimage.  Unfortunately, I no
longer have that configuration, so I can't tell you exactly what my settings
were.  I only mention all this to give you a little hope.  :)
