It sounds like you're doing everything right, but it's still not working! I wonder what would have happened if you had booted from the CD in order to install rather than using sysinstall from a running system. As I said before, I've run STABLE and CURRENT on the same box, so I know this works. I'm sorry I can't offer any more help than the measly suggestion above!
