Modes that aren't supported by your monitor automatically get deleted
when you start X, so as to not possibly damage it.  Make sure the your
hsync and vsync are properly listed in /etc/XF86Config.

Maybe all you need to do is <ctrl> <alt> <number-pad -/+> to switch to a
different mode.
