I see that using this PATCHLEVEL method seems easier to handle when updating, but the other way isn't more diffcult either, you can just modify PORTVERSION and run make makesum. The point is that those patches are small but they can seriously prolong the fetching phase of the build due the enormous number of FTP transactions.
