Are the services running (sockstat -4l)?
Are they also listening at the nic?
Can you connect on the localhost to sendmail?
Is an ipfilter or firewall effective? Can you check it's log?

Do you want to connect from a host within your LAN to the mailhost?
Do you want to connect from a host behind the NAT router to a host
that's located outside?
