I encountered this problem on my first try on FreeBSD. I compiled my
kernel with firewall-support but 'forgot' to configure the firewall
itself.

I assume your firewall was working on 4.3-RELEASE. Did you compile the
CURRENT-kernel with firewall-support ? Did the merge-master completed
successfully (so that the firewall-rules are still in your config files) ?
