If that second statement was supposed to build a kernel called XYZ, then 
don't forget that the command should be "make buildkernel KERNCONF=XYZ"

Also, problems with making the world in FreeBSD-STABLE are better 
directed to stable@freebsd.org instead of questions, as the right 'sort' 
of people tend to be listening on -stable. :-)
