Hi,

I'm confused (what else is new) about some stuff with packages
and releases that 4.6-RC is having. before you go any further, please
realise this is NOT an attack on anyone, it's not a complaint and i
am not expecting anyone to do anything unless they think it might be
a good idea..

in ports/i386 (the home of the package trees)

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root  wheel    15 Jun  1  2001 packages -> packages-stable

lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     18 May 20 15:35 packages-4.6-release -> packages-4-stable/
lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     18 May 20 15:35 packages-4.6-stable -> packages-4-stable/
drwxr-xr-x  74 1006  1006   3584 May 20 15:35 packages-5-current
lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     17 Apr 20 04:12 packages-5.0-current -> packages-5.0-dp1/

lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     18 Apr 30 21:51 packages-current -> packages-5-current
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root  wheel    17 Jun  1  2001 packages-stable -> packages-4-stable

i don't understand the logic above exactly

packages packages-stable packages-4-stable packages-4-current packages-4.2-stable
packages-4.3-stable packages-4.5-stable packages-4.6-RC packages-4.6-RC1 packages-4.6-RC2
packages-4.6-release packages-4.6-stable

are all the same directory: packages-4-stable

packages-5-current packages-current

are the same directory: packages-5-current

packages-5.0-current packages-5.0-dp1

are the same directory: packages-5.0-dp1

packages-4.5-release and pacckages-4.4-release are individual directories.

the above is pretty confusing. is there any chance we can move away from "frozen" package
release trees and simply have:

packages-4-stable - 4.X package tree
packages-5-stable - 5.X package tree

it's a bit worse in the alpha tree IMHO

lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     15 Mar 19 05:14 packages -> packages-stable
drwxr-xr-x  73 1006  1006   2560 May 20 11:33 packages-4-stable
drwxr-xr-x  74 1006  1006   1536 May 10  2001 packages-4.3-release
lrwxrwxrwx   1 1006  1006     17 Aug 18  2001 packages-4.4-release -> packages-4-stable
lrwxrwxrwx   1 1006  1006     17 Dec 21 05:30 packages-4.5-release -> packages-4-stable
lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     16 May 22 04:15 packages-4.6-RC -> packages-4.6-RC3
drwxr-xr-x  74 1006  1006   2560 May 22 06:33 packages-4.6-RC3
lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     16 May 22 06:33 packages-4.6-release -> packages-4.6-RC3
drwxr-xr-x  71 1006  1006   1536 Sep  4  2001 packages-5-current
lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     16 Apr 20 04:12 packages-5.0-current -> packages-5.0-dp1
drwxr-xr-x  72 1006  1006   2560 Apr  6 03:19 packages-5.0-dp1
lrwxr-xr-x   1 1006  1006     16 Apr 20 04:12 packages-current -> packages-5.0-dp1
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root  wheel    17 Jun  1  2001 packages-stable -> packages-4-stable

packages packages-stable packages-4-stable packages-4.4-release packages-4.5-release
are all the same directory: packages-4-stable

packages-4.6-RC packages-4.6-RC3 packages-4.6-release
are all the same directory: packages-4.6RC3

packages-current packages-5.0-dp1 packages-5.0-current
are all the same directory: packages-5.0-dp1

packages-5-current, packages-4.3-release are individual directories

it's also confusing and worse, it's out of sync with the i386 packages tree. also
there is a 4.6-RC3 release tree, even though there is only a 4.6-RC1 release on
alpha, a 4.6-RC2 on i386 and no in between directories in the alpha packages tree.

does the packages-4-stable tree not work on older 4.X releases ?

regards,

-jason
