First, type "dmesg", and look for a line similar (if not exactly like) this:
	lpt0 at 0x278-0x27f irq 7 on isa
If not, your computer does not have a parallel port which FreeBSD can
identify (not likely): since it will almost definitely be there, let's continue.

Whatever name pops up on dmesg is what we'll work with (lpt0, lpt1, etc):

type:
	lptest > /dev/lpt0
*don't* forget the ">" like your message did! It won't work without it!

At this point, *something* should happen, most likely some output, but
possibly just the "ready" light flashing on the printer. If you get *any* response
at all, then you are on the right track.

Here I leave it until you get back to us, since it is here that I have a question:
what kind of printer is this? Postscript, PCL, etc? If you don't know, can you
tell me what programs you used to use with it under dos?

Yours,

Subject: Printer

I have an HP 722C, I have been trying to get my printer to work in FreeBSD
for a few days now. I have followed everything the handbook has said and
nothing happens when I lptest /dev/lpt0. I have ./MAKEDEV'd done it all,
but nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Progress takes away what forever took to find -dmb
