| I have stayed out of this discussion (after all, I am not a native English
| speaker, and we certainly do not use two spaces in Slovak).
|
| I was quite surprised about the double spacing when I came to America. I do
| recall having read somewhere several years ago that, indeed, one space was
| preferred now. I do not remember where I read it (*maybe* Writer's
| Digest?), I just remember having read it, and being happy about it (since
| it allowed me to go back to the way I used to do back home).

Singapore and Hong Kong follows British conventions. Taiwan, Japan,
and the Philippines follows American conventions. China does its own thing.
I have correspondence from all of the above countries and they all use 2 space before the
period. Our teachers stressed 2 spaces to death when I learned
English. (At various stages of my life, I learned English from
many different nationals when i switched schools. Singapore -> Philippines
-> British -> Australia -> Canadia -> South Africa -> United States)

None of the above mentioned teachers ever told me that "one space
before the period" was acceptable and stressed two spaces.
