Please be careful with case on names. Does "I went thru the xf86setup" mean that you used '/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup' to create the /etc/XF86Config file? Or, did you use /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config? /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup is better for a first attempt. Surely, the S3 has more than 64k videoram, doesn't it?. Try /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup and carefully record the steps and results. Also, use /usr/X11R6/bin/SuperProbe. Repost the results and maybe we can help.
