We have been running the netccitt code for
many years now on BSDI using ADAX cards.
We use it essentially exclusively
for the OSI protocols.  We made two
wrongs a right ;-)

Sure there is.  You have to make it work, compile without warnings,
provide some sample applications, and then agree to maintain it.  Just
a Small Matter of Programming.
