I forget exactly, but when java sees /proc it tries to use some
special file /proc/curfile or something like that, which, uh, on dual
core doesn't work reliably.

I can confirm that my system is a dual core AMD64 system where I have insta=
lled freebsd 7 and have compiled a custom kernel.
