you may want to check the /etc/login.conf file for openfiles line.
After you change the line, you need to run 'cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf'
Then I think you need to start a new shell to have it take effect.

If you are in csh/tcsh, use limit too see the number of open files you 
can have.  In ksh/sh use ulimit -a.
