Well, I tried Justin Gibbs' suggestion of moving eisa_configure()
to after the call to isa_configure() in i386/i386/autoconfig. The
strip-down kernel (i.e., only essential devices) still hangs on my
EISA system with AHA 1742 adaptor.

Note: the system did not panic and drop me into DDB. It became
unresponsive to any input.

To recreate the problem, run iozone with a file size of 32 MB.
