Back up your current /etc (and other important files) to a safe, far away 
place (like another computer or floppy)

Make 2.1 boot floppy.

boot with 2.1 floppy.

Select 'upgrade' option.

Follow the prompts.

I upgraded two or three machines this way and no problems.
