Hello,

No one replied to my original message, but I have since managed to get
XFree86 up and running. Turns out this machine uses an S3 Trio 64V2/DX
graphics card with 2048K RAM.

I set up XF86 to use the S3 server, but it complained that it wasn't
installed - I somehow forgot that part. I then installed the S3 server
and GNOME, typed "startx" and I was in business!

This is pretty nifty - I could get used to having four X-Term windows
open.
