I mention this in the HAL FAQ in question 3 (How do I mount media using
HAL):

NOTE: Volumes that you wish to manage using hal should NOT be listed in
/etc/fstab. This is especially true for CD devices and floppy disk devices.

What if I extend this note to mention the error you might see if the
fstab entry is still present?
