Log:
  Simplify always evaluated branch (`e != NULL`)
  
  - xalloc(..) ensures that e will be non-null via malloc + err.
  - `e` is already dereferenced above, so logically it's impossible
    to hit the lower test without crashing if it was indeed NULL.
