In general, I've always "followed" mailto links by cutting and pasting into a decent mailer. I can't stand waiting for the bloated Netscape composer to start, just to use its limited feature set. I would love it if Netscape would provide a mechanism to start a user-selected application to handle mailto: links, just like helper applications handle arbitrary MIME types.
