With a bit of care and hand-munging your /etc files, you should be
able to bootstrap by installing the new source, compile and install
the new config, configure and install a new kernel, then run a ``make
world''.  If you are paranoid, run it in single-user mode only.  (I
don't, though i have to live with things like a broken ps(1) during
the compilation.)
