Did you use /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup?  If you look at help from the
mouse screen, it will tell you to try all the options, etc.

It found my PS/2 mouse OK on a desktop, but, on a TI 4000E laptop, it
cannot find the mouse because (I guess) a non-standard hardware.
WINNT required a TI driver to use the mouse.
